I charge 2p per word for a full copy edit, and 1p per word for a proof read, with a two-week deadline. It goes without saying that if your organisation has its own pay scales for freelancers, please contact me regardless. If you need something turned around faster, please contact me first of all; a good rule of thumb for a 48-72hr turnaround would be 5p/3p per word.
I prefer to work from pdfs, but hard copy isn’t a problem, and you can NDA me if necessary, too.
When proof reading, I’ll look at spelling and grammar only; it’s best to provide a laid out manuscript for this work.
During a copy edit, I’ll consider spelling, grammar, consistency and/or plot, clarity, readability, and layout, and make suggestions accordingly. I can work either from raw text or a laid out document, but obviously layout suggestions won’t be made on raw text.
For technical publications, such as gaming supplements and rulebooks, I’d ideally receive your house and/or setting style guide and a lexicon alongside the files I’ll be working on. In addition to my standard copy editing considerations, I will additionally be looking at consistency with your IP and/or lexicon, clarity of technical writing (such as rules or stage-by-stage guides) and consistency between the main publication and any reference sheets, cards, or other gaming aids or accessories. This may vary depending on the nature of the project you’d like to commission me for, the level of work you’d like me to do, or the deadline you have, but I’d love to hear from you.
